The Gassho-mura Village in Gero Onsen is illuminated at night only during the autumn foliage season. The Old Odo House in the village is booked exclusively for your tour. The tour offers a rare opportunity to enjoy a light meal. such as Gohei-mochi grilled rice cake, local sake tasting, and autumn foliage in illumination at one of Japan’s cultural heritage sites.

The former Kikusui-so Inn, a historical architecture relocated to the Onsen-ji Temple premises for preservation, is reserved exclusively for your tour. Enjoy the performance by the "Geigi" traditional performers and tea ceremony while viewing autumn foliage in illumination. The "Ryukohkutsu" Japanese garden will be illuminated only during this period, and visitors can experience a Zen meditation in a mystical atmosphere.

Traditional Dance and Music by Geigi

Geigi are professional dance/music performers who have been a part of the culture in Gero Onsen since ancient times. Dressed in elegant kimono, the Geigi performers entertain guests with traditional dance and music and enchantingconversations.

Zen Meditation

During the Zen meditation, one sits quietly and breathes deeply, observing the state of oneself. Zen meditation helps relieve stress and anxiety, improves sleep quality, and ultimately helps maintain your mental and physical health.

Tea Ceremony

The tea ceremony is a Japanese traditional way of hospitality that goes beyond just sipping tea. The host and the guests share the beautiful view of the garden outside of the tearoom and the appreciation of the carefully selected tea bowl while being immersed in the serenity of the tea ceremony.

Onsen-ji Temple

Inside of Kikusui-so

Located at the top of a long flight of 173 stone steps leading up from Jizo-do Hall, Onsen-ji Temple offers a panoramic view of the Gero townscape. The temple is lit up at night every year when the autumn foliage is at its best, attracting many visitors with its brilliant colors floating in　the night sky. The former Kikusui-so Inn building, located on the temple grounds, is a historical architecture with a distinct Sukiya style. Originally a part of the long-established Japanese inn, Suimei-kan, the Kikusui-so building was relocated to the temple grounds to preserve the traditional architecture, and it still creates a solemn atmosphere for those who visit there.

Gassho-mura Village

Outer and Inside views of the Old Odo House

The village is a precious outdoor museum, formed with ten thatched houses of distinct Gassho-zukuri architectural design. The village includes the Old Odo House, a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and other houses relocated from nearby Shirakawa-go Village, a World Heritage site, etc. The folk museum in the village exhibits traditional farming and daily tools, giving visitors a sense of the traditional lifestyle and culture of the village. The village also gives visitors the feel of the landscape of old Japan, with wildflowers that change each season.
