About Gassho- mura
Gassho-mura is a replica of a village with 10 gassho-
zukuri houses relocated from the Shirakawa-go UNESCO
World Heritage Site and other areas, including Odo
House, a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk
Cultural Property. Its folklore museum exhibits farm
implements and articles of daily life and provides visitors
with the opportunity to experience up close the cultural
life of a gassho village. In the village, you can experience
original scenery of Japan and its four seasons through
the cultural life of Hida, as well as its wild grasses and
variety of cultivated plants.
Hiburi fishing on the clear Maze River
Hiburi fishing is a traditional fishing method used on
early autumn nights that is based on the behavior of
Ochi-ayu, sweetfish heading downstream to spawn.
Fishermen set their nets in the river and frighten
sweetfish upstream and downstream with fire and
torches to drive them into their nets.
The fishermen’s shouts of “ho-ho” echo in the
gorge, and the flickering flames create a fantastic
spectacle. The river breeze in the evening driving away
the lingering summer heat and faintly illuminated space
make it a special experience.
