With 2000 years of history, Ise Shrine is known as "The Heart of the Japanese People". Officially, its name is purely, shrine. People in the Edo Period often said that they'd like to visit Ise Shrine at least once in their lifetimes and in the best of times, 1 in 6 Japanese people visited the shrine in a six month period. Rebuilt once every twenty years using traditional building techniques, it's a great chance to see traditional Japanese wooden architecture.
