The Matsumoto City Museum of Art opened in 2002 as a general art museum. In the front square, Maboroshi-no-Hana, a huge monumental artwork by world-renowned contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama is displayed. She is a Matsumoto native and this artwork is one of the icons of the museum. The museum encompasses a collection of Yayoi Kusama's artworks. Also, the shop in the museum sells Yayoi Kusama's original items. Yayoi Kusama is famous for her use of polka dot design. There are polka dot garbage cans and benches inside and outside of the museum.
