A Mountain Village Straight Out of the Edo Period
The Nakasando was one of the five major roads of the Edo Period that connected Edo [modern day Tokyo] to Kyoto. On these roads, there were two particularly popular rest stops along the way. Much of Tsumago remains from the Edo period to this day, as do the old buildings of Tumago's sister town Magome, which is around two and a half hours away, on foot.
