Hachimanbori was originally built to defend Hachiman Castle by using the lake water of Lake Biwa. Later, it was used for travel and trade between Lake Biwa and the surrounding area and became the source of power for the Omi merchants to make their fortunes.
These days it is mainly used for tourism, and along Hachimanbori, several companies operate tour boats. Prices depend on the course, around ¥1,000 per person, and take about 30 to 40 minutes. Boats sail regularly between 9 am to 5 pm, and reservations are not required.
