The name of Izu comes from Izusan Shrine. The guardian deity of the hot springs, as well as the deity of extinguishing fires in the Izu and Hakone area, is worshipped here. It is also famous for the rendezvous of Minamoto no Yoritomo (源頼朝-the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan) and Masako Hojo (北条政子- wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo). This has resulted in it becoming popular among couples as a spiritual hot spot for love. After climbing the 837 stone steps, you can overlook the city and the sea of Atami and enjoy the wonderful view.
