A Castle Sat High Upon the Mountain and Squirrels

Located high atop the Mount Kinka, centered in the middle of Gifu City, sits the home castle of the premier shogun of Japan's Warring States Period, Oda Nobunaga. Connecting Gifu Castle to the ground below, there is a ropeway to save you from the arduous trek up the mountain. If you should happen to be interested in hiking to the top, however, it is a manageable climb. The peak of the mountain, along with its scenic view of the surrounding area, is a popular date spot amongst local couples. At the foot of the mountain, Japan's first "Squirrel Village" can be found as well. The area makes a great destination for a road trip too.

Directions	JR *Gifu Castle is on top of Kinkazan Mountain. You can take the ropeway in Gifu Park to get to the castle. Route 1 JR Tokaido Main Line from Nagoya (platform 5 or 6) to Gifu. (20m) Go to platform 11 or 12 after taking JR Gifu station north exit. Take Gifu Bus City Loop Line (counterclockwise) or Gifu Takatomi Line(to Takatomi) from Gifu to GifuKoen, Rekishi Hakubutsukan Mae (15m). Walk 3 minutes toward northeast to Gifu Kinkazan Ropeway. Take Gifu Kinkazan Ropeway (3m). Walk 8 minutes to Gifu Castle from Gifu Ropeway Sancho station. MEITETSU Route 2 Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line from Meitetsu Nagoya (platform 1) to Meitetsu Gifu. (40m) Take the central exit and walk south to a bus stop in front of JR Gifu station. (It is NOT a bus stop in front of Meitetsu Gufu station.) Take Gifu Bus City Loop Line (counterclockwise) or Gifu Takatomi Line(to Takatomi) from Gifu to GifuKoen, Rekishi Hakubutsukan Mae (15m). Walk 3 minutes northeast to Gifu Kinkazan Ropeway. Take Gifu Kinkazan Ropeway (3m). Walk 8 minutes to Gifu Castle from Gifu Ropeway Sancho statin.
